Empowered Minds: A Scientific Approach to Youth Mental Resilience on World Suicide Prevention Day

Empowered Minds: A Scientific Approach to
Youth Mental Resilience on
World Suicide Prevention Day

On World Suicide Prevention Day and every day, let us stand together to support the mental well-being of our youth. By fostering open communication, providing resources, and promoting self-care, we can create a world where everyone has the tools they need to choose life.

On World's Suicide Prevention Day, School for Life had the privilege of participating in a truly exceptional initiative – "The Human Library," launched by the DSW Office at UPES.

It was a day filled with heartfelt conversations and shared wisdom, and we couldn't be prouder of our SFL faculty members who became "Human Books" to inspire our vibrant student community.

These interactions aimed to make a profound impact on our students by providing unique insights, guidance, and a diverse range of perspectives and stories.

Let's delve into science-based pointers that draw upon research and evidence in the field of mental health and suicide prevention.

A) Understand the Neurobiology of Stress: Research shows that chronic stress can have a profound impact on the brain, particularly the areas responsible for regulating emotions. Understanding how stress affects the brain can motivate individuals to prioritize stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation exercises.

B) Connect Social Support to Brain Function: Studies indicate that social support has a direct impact on brain function, influencing the release of neurotransmitters like oxytocin and reducing the effects of stress hormones. Cultivating strong social connections can thus be seen as a neuroprotective factor against mental health challenges.

C) Recognize the Role of Neurotransmitters: Imbalances in neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine, are often linked to mood disorders. Encouraging activities that naturally boost these neurotransmitters, like regular exercise, adequate sleep, and a balanced diet, can contribute to better mental health.

D) Explore the Gut-Brain Connection: The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication system between the gut and the brain. Emerging research suggests that a healthy gut microbiome is linked to better mental health. Encourage a diet rich in probiotics and prebiotics to support gut health.

E) Educate on Neuroplasticity: The brain's ability to adapt and reorganize itself, known as neuroplasticity, is a key factor in mental health. Learning and practicing new skills can enhance neuroplasticity, promoting resilience and coping abilities in the face of challenges.

F) Stress the Impact of Sleep on Mental Health: Sleep is crucial for cognitive function and emotional well-being. Lack of sleep can exacerbate symptoms of mental health disorders. Educate on the importance of a consistent sleep schedule and good sleep hygiene practices.

G) Consider the Impact of Substance Abuse: Substance abuse, including alcohol and drugs, can have detrimental effects on mental health. Science consistently supports the link between substance abuse and an increased risk of suicidal ideation. Promote awareness of the potential consequences of substance use on mental well-being.

Remember, while these pointers are science-based, individual experiences and circumstances can vary. It's crucial for individuals facing mental health challenges to seek personalized guidance from mental health professionals. Hence, here are practical pointers to help the youth navigate through tough times and build resilience against the risk of suicide.

  1. Encourage open conversations about mental health. Break the stigma surrounding mental health issues by fostering an environment where youth feel comfortable discussing their feelings without judgment. This can be within families, schools, or communities.
  2. Cultivate strong connections with friends, family, and mentors. Having a reliable support system provides a safety net during difficult times.
  3. Encourage open communication and check in on one another regularly. If struggling with mental health, don't hesitate to reach out to mental health professionals.
  4. Familiarize yourself with the warning signs of suicide, such as changes in behavior, withdrawal from activities, or expressing feelings of hopelessness. If you notice these signs in yourself or someone else, take them seriously and seek help immediately.
  5. Teach and practice healthy coping mechanisms for stress and anxiety. This can include activities like exercise, mindfulness, journaling, or engaging in hobbies.
  6. Break down big goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate small victories, and understand that setbacks are a natural part of life. Developing resilience involves learning from challenges and adapting.
  7. Emphasize the importance of self-care as a daily practice. Encourage good sleep hygiene, balanced nutrition, and regular physical activity. Taking care of the body is closely linked to maintaining a healthy mind.
  8. Be mindful of social media and its impact on mental health. Limit screen time, practice digital detox, and foster meaningful in-person connections.
  9. Advocate for mental health education in schools and communities. Knowledge is a powerful tool, and understanding mental health can reduce stigma, increase empathy, and provide valuable resources for those in need.
  10. Encourage acts of kindness and compassion. Small gestures can make a significant impact on someone's day. Building a culture of support and understanding helps create a world where everyone feels valued.
On World Suicide Prevention Day and every day, let us stand together to support the mental well-being of our youth. By fostering open communication, providing resources, and promoting self-care, we can create a world where everyone has the tools they need to choose life. Remember, your story is important, and help is always available.

From Classroom Gamification to QS Reimagine Education: Our Journey at School For Life, UPES

From Classroom Gamification to QS Reimagine Education: Our Journey at School For Life, UPES

The past few years have challenged us in unimaginable ways, pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation. For educators, the pandemic forced a swift transition to virtual teaching, leaving us with a daunting question: How do we keep our students engaged and motivated?

At School For Life, UPES, we found an inspiring solution through the power of gamification. Today, I am thrilled to share our journey and the exciting news that has recently come our way.

As the world grappled with the realities of remote learning, I vividly remember the moment when I decided to implement gamification into our virtual classes. The aim was simple: to make learning more engaging and meaningful for our students.

We introduced elements of competition, collaboration, and fun into our lessons, and the results were astonishing. To my surprise, the impact of gamification on our students was nothing short of remarkable.

The level of interest and participation from our students skyrocketed. They were no longer passive observers in a virtual classroom; they became active, enthusiastic participants in the learning process.

It was heartwarming to witness their eagerness to tackle challenges, solve problems, and work together as a team. One of the key milestones in my gamification journey was the development of our signature course, "Living Conversations."

This innovative program seamlessly blended life skills education with gamification techniques. Students learned essential life skills, from effective communication to problem-solving, through immersive and engaging experiences. The course not only enhanced their academic knowledge but also equipped them with crucial real-world skills.

Today, it brings me immense pride to share the news that School For Life, UPES, has been shortlisted for the Lifelong Learning Award by QS Reimagine Education. This prestigious recognition, earned through our gamified Life Skills course "Living Conversations," is a testament to our dedication and creativity.

Competing against over 1200 submissions from across the globe, evaluated by a panel of more than 600 international experts, our entry has secured a well-deserved spot on the 2023 QS Reimagine Education Awards shortlist.
This achievement represents the dedication, hard work, and innovative spirit that our institution embodies.

As I reflect on this incredible journey, I can't help but feel overwhelmed with gratitude. Our experience with gamification has transformed the way we teach and learn. It has shown us that innovation and creativity can thrive even in the face of adversity. It has reminded us that when we dare to reimagine education, we can achieve remarkable results.

Our journey from virtual classrooms to being shortlisted for the Lifelong Learning Award by QS Reimagine Education is a testament to the power of gamification and the unwavering commitment of our team at School For Life, UPES.

We remain inspired and motivated to continue pushing the boundaries of education, nurturing the talents and passions of our students, and preparing them for a bright and promising future.

As we eagerly await the results of the awards, we do so with a heart full of hope, pride, and gratitude. Our journey has just begun, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for School For Life, UPES, and the students we serve.

Together, we will continue to reimagine education and inspire the world. Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for being a part of our inspiring journey.

My Teaching Approach

My Teaching Approach

To follow the Andragogy model of teaching for effective facilitation of life skills education, here are 3 prime strategies as an essential part of my ‘Living Conversations’ project and they can be applied by any teacher to make the overall learning environment motivating and fun.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

- Confucius

To effectively teach life skills to my students and assist them in acquiring the skills necessary to effectively navigate the challenges of life beyond the classroom, I apply the ‘Andragogy’ model of teaching that focuses on their unique learning requirements.

Andragogy, which was developed by Malcolm Knowles in the 1960s, asserts that learning should be directed towards self-actualization, gaining experience, and problem-solving.

To follow the Andragogy model of teaching for effective facilitation of life skills education, here are 3 prime strategies as an essential part of my ‘Living Conversations’ project and they can be applied by any teacher to make the overall learning environment motivating and fun:

(1) Self-actualization through Reflections and Self-assessments: Students can learn more about their strengths and areas of improvement in several life skill domains by reflecting and self-evaluating.

Weekly self-assessment exercises, reflective journaling, and one-on-one talks with the teacher or mentor are part of the ‘Living Conversations’ project to achieve this.

(2) Gaining Experience through Team Projects: It involves engaging students in interdisciplinary projects that require them to work together to achieve common goals and apply multiple life skills such as critical thinking, communication, teamwork, leadership, and time management.

To achieve this, my ‘Living Conversations’ project has a 50% weightage of meaningful group projects in its overall evaluation scheme.

(3) Problem-solving through Community Outreach and Service: It involves getting students engaged in some form of problem-solving through volunteer work that helps them gain crucial soft skills like empathy, compassion, and cultural understanding.

To achieve this, my "Living Conversations" project has a specific module on ‘Community Outreach’, allowing students to apply what they have learned to current events and develop an appreciation for social responsibility.

To paraphrase Abigail Adams,
"Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and diligence".

“Transformation for Future - Proof Education”

The future of education is likely to involve a greater emphasis on online and distance learning.

"Transformation for
Future - Proof Education”

Recently, I had the privilege of moderating a fascinating session at the recent GUS Academic Summit on “Transformation for Future - Proof Education”.

The future of education is likely to involve a greater emphasis on online and distance learning, as well as the integration of technology and virtual reality into the learning experience.

Additionally, there may be a shift towards more flexible and self-paced learning, as well as a focus on providing students with practical, hands-on experience in their chosen fields.

This could include increased use of internships, apprenticeships, and other forms of experiential learning. Overall, the goal of education in the future will be to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly digital workforce.

Recently, I had the privilege of moderating a fascinating session at the recent GUS Academic Summit on “Transformation for Future - Proof Education”.

I want to express my gratitude to the entire organizing team for inviting me to be a part of this event and giving me the opportunity to moderate the session.

I also want to extend my sincere appreciation to our two excellent speakers Sheetal Khanka (PhD) and Michelle John. Their insights and contributions made the session informative and engaging for everyone in attendance.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and expertise with us!

Thank you Janki Shah from University Canada West, for the felicitations.
